Prime Minister Carney and other leaders wish ‘Eid Mubarak’

PRIME Minister Mark Carney on Thursday said in a statement on Eid al-Fitr: “Tonight, Muslims in Canada and around the world will celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

“Over the coming days, Muslims will gather with family and friends to enjoy feasts, exchange gifts, recite prayers, and reflect on the spiritual lessons of Ramadan. Before this sacred celebration starts, Muslims will give Zakat al-Fitr.This is an act of charity that reflects the spirit of generosity at the heart of Islam.

“As Eid sheds light on the importance of community, unity, and faith, we are reminded that these values are embedded in the many contributions Canadian Muslims make to building a stronger, more resilient country.

“I wish a blessed and happy Eid al-Fitr to all those celebrating. Eid Mubarak.”

Premier David Eby

PREMIER David Eby said in a statement on Friday: “With the sighting of the new crescent moon, the holy month of Ramadan has come to a close, and Muslims here in British Columbia and around the world are joining with friends, family and community to break their fast and begin three days of celebration for Eid al-Fitr.

“After a month focused on prayer and fasting, Eid is a time of joy and connection, and an invitation to practise generosity and charitable giving, so everyone in the community has what they need to share in the occasion.

“While this is a joyful holiday, any celebration that brings people together also reminds us of those who are far away. I know many Muslim British Columbians will be thinking about friends and family who are threatened by growing conflict and insecurity in the Middle East and around the world, even as they celebrate this joyful occasion.

“I join them in wishing for peace and safety for those they care for and love, and a world where everyone can celebrate together without fear of violence.

“May the next three days be filled with joy and blessings for all who are celebrating.

“Eid Mubarak!”

CONSERVATIVE Leader Pierre Poilievre said in a statement: “Tonight, the most solemn month in the Islamic year draws to a close.

“As Shawwal begins, Muslims across our great country come together to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. Their weeks of intensified reflection and self-denial are at an end; the time has come to break the fast.

“As you gather as families and congregations, I want to send my warmest wishes to Canada’s incredible Muslim community.

“Know that His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition will always defend your places of worship, and uphold your right to practice your faith.

“Eid Mubarak.”
