FOUR individuals have now been convicted and sentenced in connection with the homicide of Ryan Nagy.
On June 29, 2023, at 7:05 a.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a call for service at a residence in the 7600-block of 17 Avenue. Upon arrival, police located a 19-year-old man, later identified as Ryan Nagy, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of the first responders, the victim died at the scene. A second victim was located suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and worked in close partnership with the Burnaby RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service.
On September 14, 2024, the BC Prosecution Service approved charges of manslaughter and forcible confinement against then 20-year-old Ali Shamkhi, 20-year-old Rais Usman, 20-year-old Ousmane Keita and 23-year-old Rhoda Diabikulu.
On March 5, 2026, Shamkhi was sentenced to a global sentence of 10.5 years in prison for manslaughter and unrelated firearms offences, after pleading guilty on October 31, 2025. At the time of sentencing, he had spent 18 days in pre-sentence custody. The court also imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition and a DNA order.
On April 23, 2026, Usman was sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter after pleading guilty to the charge on October 17, 2025. At the time of sentencing, he had spent approximately 19.5 months in custody, credited as two years and five months. The court also imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition and a DNA order.
On June 12, 2026, Keita was sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter after pleading guilty to the charge on March 18, 2026. At the time of sentencing, he had spent just over 1.5 months in custody, credited as 2.5 months. The court also imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition and a DNA order.
On September 1, 2026, Ms. Diabikulu was sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter after pleading guilty to the charge on March 17, 2026. At the time of sentencing, she had spent approximately 12 months in custody, credited as 18 months. The court also imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition and a DNA order.
“Thanks to the quick response from the Burnaby RCMP and the subsequent teamwork with IHIT investigators, all four individuals responsible for Ryan’s death have been held accountable,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “Our thoughts are with Ryan’s loved ones and the surviving victim as they continue their healing journey from this traumatic event.”
