BC NDP: Doerkson confirms backroom promise to private interests while hiding it from drivers

THE BC NDP said that after claiming twice on Tuesday that he had made “no promises” on car insurance – despite having made several explicit promises in a letter he sent on September 29 – Interim Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson retracted and apologized on Wednesday.

It said that this confirms Doerkson made a promise to private industry groups instead of the millions of BC drivers who would be impacted by it. Thanks to the leak, BC drivers now know that Doerkson is committed to overhauling BC’s car insurance system within a year.

But there’s too much they don’t know, the BC NDP pointed out:

  • Why he made a major promise to private interests instead of the millions of British Columbians who would be negatively impacted by it
  • If he was going to tell British Columbians about his plan – or wait until after the election
  • Why he denied twice that he made the promises in the letter he signed
  • Why his letter commits to consulting with lawyers and private insurers on the legislation but not drivers
  • Whether he’s receiving donations or other campaign support from the same lawyers and industry groups he made the promise to
  • If he knows how much his plan will cost drivers (Alberta drivers pay double)

The BC NDP said it has released an ad on Doerkson’s secret deal, available here.
