THE New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit is investigating an arson in the 800-block of York Street and is examining connections to a break-and-enter reported at the same residence the day before.
On Monday, October 5, at approximately 3:45 a.m., New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services contacted police after responding to a residential fire. Officers had attended the residence the previous day as part of a break-and-enter investigation.
While the investigation is still in its early stages, investigators believe both incidents were targeted and are working to determine whether or how they are related. The residents were not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The home sustained significant damage as a result of the fire.
“Investigators are exploring the nexus between the break-and-enter reported the previous day and the fire that occurred early the next morning,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, Media Relations Officer. “At this stage, we believe both incidents were targeted rather than random. There is currently no indication of an ongoing risk to the public, and Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses to better understand the circumstances surrounding both incidents.”
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
