Abbotsford Police launch BolaWrap

THE Abbotsford Police said on Monday that in a progressive move toward modern, community-focused policing, it is officially deploying the BolaWrap—a non-lethal restraint device designed to safely immobilize individuals from a distance without relying on pain compliance.

Abbotsford Police will be holding a press conference and live demonstration at their headquarters on Thursday where “officers will showcase the BolaWrap in action, demonstrating its functionality and effectiveness in safely restraining a subject.”

Abbotsford Police say they led the approval process for BolaWrap’s use in British Columbia by working with BC Provincial Policing Standards and is the only BC Police service currently using this non-lethal device.

According to wrap.com/our-tools: “The BolaWrap® 150 is a new, novel approach that achieves compliance through cognitive disruption and a temporary reduction in physical movement, not pain.

“BolaWrap® 150’s success stems from a multi-sensory cognitive disruption that leverages light, sound, and tactile sensation to expand a pre-escalation period–giving officers the advantage to place a subject into handcuffs safety.

“Today the BolaWrap® is successfully deployed in over 1,000 jurisdictions worldwide is rapidly becoming the fastest growing trend in law enforcement.”

The BolaWrap works by deploying an eight-foot Kevlar tether that wraps around the subject’s body, typically legs or arms, to restrict movement.
