The government of Premier Alison Redford continues its trade push into the lucrative Indian market, but it’s nowhere near close yet to a done deal.

India wants Alberta’s energy, but International and Intergovernmental Relations Minister Cal Dallas says new pipelines are key to getting it to the world’s fourth-largest energy consumer.

Speaking to reporters from Singapore where Alberta has opened its latest trade office, Dallas says India is ready to do business.

He says Canada is considered the preferred supplier because of its political stability and environmental sustainability, but port access is a big barrier.

A recent McKinsey and Co. report says by 2030, India will have to meet half of its energy demands through imports.
