Armed robbery at Newton’s Payal Business Centre

SURREY RCMP say they are seeking information following an armed robbery that occurred at a Newton business Wednesday morning.

On November 22 at approximately 11:08 a.m., Surrey RCMP received the report of an armed robbery at a business located in the 8100-block of 128 Street. One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

Well-known Punjabi journalist Gurpreet Sahota tweeted: “Injuring the owner of a money exchange company in Surrey’s Payal Business Centre, four gunmen stole about $10,000 from the establishment. They made an unsuccessful attempt to open the safe as well. The owner had injuries to his neck and head.”

Payal Business Centre is a famous South Asian business complex with shops, restaurants, banquet halls and a variety of businesses.

Surrey RCMP said that frontline officers arrived on scene within minutes of the call, and additional officers began making patrols in surrounding areas. The suspects were not located, and based on the initial information, police believe that the suspects fled in a dark coloured pick-up truck.

The investigation is in the early stages and police are working to obtain witness statements as well as video surveillance from the area. The Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit has been engaged.

Anyone in the area who witnessed the incident or who has video is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
