Pacific Oral Health Society: Free Oral Cancer Screening
The Pacific Oral Health Society in collaboration with The Rotary Club of Surrey-Newton will be offering a free Oral Cancer Screening Clinic on Sunday, September 8. The clinic will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pacific Oral Health Center building located at Unit #300 15850 24th Avenue, Surrey. This free clinic is open to the public. To pre-register for a free screening appointment, call 604-536-2700. The goal of the clinic is to help reduce the barriers to oral cancer screening and support the prevention and early detection of oral cancer and pre-cancer. Last year, this event had been a great success as over 400 people pre-registered for the clinic and over 400 patients were examined by the dental team. The data collected by the Pacific Oral Health Society indicated that 37 people were found to be at high risk of having oral cancer. There were five cases that were direct referrals to the cancer clinic that showed positive signs for oral cancer. www.pohs.ca
Alex Fraser Bridge: Nightly Lane Closures
Two lanes, one in each direction, on Alex Fraser Bridge are closed nightly, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The closures are expected to be ongoing until August 18 and will allow crews to continue working on improving capacity to the Alex Fraser Bridge with an additional lane and moveable barrier system. Crews will remove the southbound painted lines and then begin applying the permanent lane lines. Drivers are reminded that the maximum speed limit on the bridge is now 70 km/h. Vedic Seniors Parivar Centre of Vedic Hindu Cultural Society Surrey invites all South Asian seniors, adults and families to join all devotees of Lakshmi Narayan Hindu Temple Surrey for India Day Celebrations dedicated to the Martyrs of Jalianwala Bagh Massacre (commemorating it’s 100th Anniversary) organized by Vedic Hindu Cultural Society Surrey on Sunday, August 18 at the temple grounds at 8321 140th Street, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a wrestling competition by Hanuman Wrestling Club, Flag Hoisting Ceremony, Parade, live musical performance by Anubhav Beri and other various cultural entertainment by local artists starting at 2 p.m. Join us for the India Day Parade of different states of India starting from Brookside Gurudwara Sahib to the temple grounds . Senior women Parivar members are needed as volunteers to do seva (service) for preparing food for all devotees in the kitchen around 11:30 a.m. Seniors are needed as volunteers to do seva after 1:30 p.m. for supply of prepared food to all the stalls, to serve snacks and a variety of food items to be served free. Canadian Eyesight Global Gala Dinner: 30th Anniversary
Canadian Eyesight Global, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Surrey, and supported by the Burnaby and New Westminster clubs, celebrates 30 years of bringing eyesight to the underprivileged in Canada and India at its 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Sunday, August 18.
Rotary International President (2019-20) Mark Daniel Maloney is the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker for the event. Chief guests include Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. Homicide Support Group for Sikh Community
Valley View Funeral Home is partnering with Gurdwara Dukhnivaran Sahib Temple in Surrey to offer an 8-week Homicide Support Group designed for the Sikh community that will start in September. There will be a free information session on Thursday, August 22 at 3 p.m. at the Temple on how to register. Facilitators: Danny and Dawn Sandhu will talk about their experience of attending a Homicide Support Group after their 17-year-old son Jaylen was murdered five years ago. They will be there to answer your questions and support you in making that difficult decision about attending a support group. Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society AGM Notice
The Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Sunday, August 25 at 2 p.m. at the Society premises (Hall No. 2) located at 7050 120th Street, Surrey. Vivek Canada Presents Gala of Hope
Vivek Educational Foundation of Canada (Vivek Canada) will be hosting Gala of Hope – a fundraising dinner in support of education for rural children in Uttar Pradesh, India.
