Bandi Chor Divas greetings from Trudeau, Poilievre and Horgan

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday issued the following statement on Bandi Chhor Divas:

“Today, we join Sikh communities in Canada and around the world to celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas.

“On this holiday, Sikhs commemorate the story of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who was imprisoned in 1619 at Gwalior Fort. When given the chance to be liberated from prison, the Guru refused to be released without the 52 innocent kings who were imprisoned alongside him. Ultimately, he succeeded at freeing himself and the kings.

“Today, families and friends will gather to pray, feast, and light candles at their homes and Gurdwaras as symbols of hope, guidance, and freedom. On Bandi Chhor Divas, we reflect on the importance of standing in solidarity with those around us facing injustice, and the importance of serving those in need.

“This celebration is also an opportunity to recognize the important contributions that Canadians of the Sikh faith have made – and continue to make – to building a stronger Canada.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I wish a happy Bandi Chhor Divas to all those celebrating.”

PIERRE Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Bandi Chhor Divas:

“Today we commemorate Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji for standing up for the freedom and human rights of others at the cost of his own. Despite his wrongful imprisonment, Guru Sahib refused to accept his release unless the other fifty-two political prisoners were also released with him. His determined fight against tyranny and injustice ultimately paid off.

“On Bandi Chhor Divas, Sikhs celebrate the triumphant release of Guru Sahib and the fifty-two others that he ushered to freedom. Together, we admire his inspiring endurance and compassion, and honour the message of hope that he brought to all those suffering oppression.

“Today, as gurdwaras and homes are lit up and filled with the joy of fellowship, I hope all those celebrating are blessed with comfort and peace as you commemorate this incredible heritage.

“On behalf our entire Conservative team, and from my family to yours, Happy Bandi Chhor Divas!”

B.C. Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement marking Bandi Chhor Divas:

“Today, Sikh communities throughout British Columbia and around the world will celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas.

“This is a day of prayer, contemplation and joy for the Sikh community, as families and friends exchange sweets, and light up their homes and gurdwaras.

“The holiday celebrates the story of the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Guru, from prison. According to Sikh history, the Guru refused liberation for himself unless 52 innocent kings and princes, also held captive, were freed with him. His devotion to the cause of peace and the freedom of his fellow prisoners is a reminder of the importance of aiding those in need.

“As people once again gather in larger groups, we should continue to appreciate the different health choices made by others.

“This day reminds us of the importance of respect and inclusion, values that British Columbians hold close to their hearts.

“On behalf of all British Columbians, I wish a happy Bandi Chhor Divas to all who celebrate.”
