KARIN Kirkpatrick, BC Liberal MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano, spoke in the legislature on Monday to recognize the 30th anniversary of the 16 days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and discuss ways to support women who are suffering.
She pointed out the serious consequences and ripple effects of violence. In addition to causing trauma, injuries and even death, there are also social and economic costs to victims’ inability to work, including the loss of wages and the reduced ability to care for their children.
Kirkpatrick called on all levels of government to address gender-based violence, as this is not a women’s issue but a human rights issue that affects all people who deserve the right to live free from violence.
