BC RCMP notifies IIO BC following serious injuries to two motorcyclists in Surrey

THE BC RCMP said on Monday that they had notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Surrey where two motorcyclists suffered serious injuries.

On Saturday, July 9, at approximately 1 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a complaint of three men who had been consuming alcohol at a local business and were preparing to leave on motorcycles.

An officer responded and located two motorcycles believed to be related to the complaint travelling north on 188 Street. He performed a U-turn and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The motorcycles did not stop and the officer discontinued attempts to conduct the traffic stop.

Shortly after, a different officer came upon a scene of a collision involving what is believed to be the two motorcycles with the operators on the ground. Emergency Health Services were contacted and the two men were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

According to the IIO BC, the collision occurred in the 6400-block of Fraser Highway.

The IIO BC is now investigating the incident in an effort to determine whether police actions contributed to their injuries.
