Body found in St. Lawrence River is of man connected to case of deaths of eight migrants

THE Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service has identified the body of a man that was found in the St. Lawrence River on July 3 in the area of Ross Island, Akwesasne, as that of Casey Oakes, 30, of Akwesasne, who went missing in March.

The police added: “The investigation into Casey’s death and the deaths of eight foreign nationals who were crossing the river by boat in March remains underway. We strongly urge anyone with information regarding these deaths to contact the Akwesasne Mohawk Police at 613-575-2340 or submit a secure tip by email at tips@akwesasne.ca.”

Four of the foreign nationals were from India, and four were from Romania.

Casey’s boat was found near the bodies of the foreign nationals who died while trying to cross illegally into the United States through Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.
