HARJIT S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, on Tuesday announced additional humanitarian support to respond to immediate needs arising from the Ukraine crisis at the virtual joint launch of the Humanitarian Flash Appeal and the Regional Refugee Response Plan for Ukraine.

The government said that Canada stands united with those affected by the conflict in Ukraine, which is why its announcing an additional $100 million in humanitarian assistance to help experienced partners address the most pressing humanitarian needs on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. This support will help provide emergency health services (including trauma care), protection, support to displaced populations and essential life-saving services such as shelter, water and sanitation, and food.

Canada will continue to work with partners, including the United Nations and non-governmental organizations, to see what more it can do to assist those impacted by this conflict.

Sajjan said: “The lives of the children of Ukraine have been thrown into chaos. Their classrooms have been replaced by bomb shelters. Their playgrounds have become battlefields. Their beds have become the hard ground. As Canadians, we have stepped up and will continue to do so. That is why today, Canada will be supporting this appeal by providing $100 million in funding for humanitarian assistance for the people of Ukraine and those who have been forced to flee to neighbouring countries. We will continue to be there for our Ukrainian friends and partners during this difficult time.”

• Canada has allocated an additional $25 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since the start of 2022. This includes $15 million to experienced humanitarian partners in Ukraine that can respond flexibly to the situation as it continues to evolve and up to $10 million to the Canadian Red Cross through the matching fund for its Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal, launched on February 24, 2022.
• Canada has offered up to $620 million in sovereign loans to support Ukraine’s economic resilience.
• Since 2014, Canada has provided more than $50 million in multifaceted assistance annually. This includes humanitarian assistance, development assistance and assistance for peace and stabilization.
