‘Carelessly discarded cigarette’ caused Strathcona fire that damaged 3 homes

THE Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says that the cause of the three-alarm fire in the 1000-block East Pender Street that damaged three homes in Strathcona on October 7 was “the result of a carelessly discarded cigarette at the rear of the property.”

The VFRS said in a tweet that the cigarette “ignited combustibles and spread to trees and nearby homes.”

It added that this is “a reminder that smoking material should only be discarded in a metal container of water or sand. Never off balconies, in planters, out of cars or around vegetation.”
