THE City of Surrey has been honoured with two awards from the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA): a Facility Excellence Award for the North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex, and a Parks Excellence Award for Unwin Park and the Jumpstart Playground. The awards exemplify the significant contribution recreation, parks, and culture investments make to the quality of life of communities throughout BC.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized once again by BCRPA for the design of these particular parks and facilities,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “As part of our newly launched Surrey Invests program, the City of Surrey will continue to build several significant capital projects over the next five years to further enhance our parks, recreation and cultural amenities for Surrey residents.”

“With a young and growing population, having an array of high quality and accessible parks, recreation and culture facilities is key to a healthy and thriving community”, said Laurie Guerra, Chair, Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee. “We thank the BCRPA for recognizing our commitment to the well-being of the residents that we serve”.

Opened in the Bridgeview neighbourhood in September 2019, the North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex is a multi-purpose facility that contains three sheets of ice, a fitness centre, community rooms and outdoor sports courts. Facility programs include a variety of hockey, skating, fitness, and dry floor activities. Large community sporting events can also be accommodated (post pandemic).

Unwin Park’s inclusive Jumpstart playground, in partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, is a universally accessible 12,000 square foot playground that opened in October 2019. The accessible play elements are designed to encourage different motor, cognitive and social skills and engage kids’ sensory systems.
