THE City of Surrey said in a statement on Thursday that recent local media reports have included “inaccurate information” about its property acquisition practices. It said it is providing additional context “to ensure Surrey residents have accurate information about how municipal land purchases are evaluated, negotiated and approved.”

The statement said: “Over the last year, the City has avoided approximately $23 million in higher land acquisition costs through independent appraisals, market analysis and negotiations. This approach supports informed real estate decisions and helps meet Surrey’s long-term infrastructure, parks and community facility needs.

“The City uses independent appraisals to establish market value and guide decision-making, but uses them as a benchmark before negotiating directly with property owners or their authorized representatives to achieve the best value for taxpayers.

“The process also includes review by multiple City departments, including environmental, engineering, legal and financial teams, and Council approval before any acquisition is completed.
