City of Vancouver: Windstorm weather response and public safety update

With Environment Canada calling for the possibility of snow early Sunday residents should be prepared for the shift in the weather

 

FOLLOWING a windstorm that saw gusts in excess of 70-90 km/hour late Friday and early Saturday morning, the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) and Vancouver Park Board crews are working to address downed trees and health and safety issues for residents while preparing for a chance of snow Sunday.

Members of the public should be aware of what do to following storm damage:

o   For downed power lines, call 911.

o   For fallen trees or large branches, call 3-1-1.

o   For clogged storm drains, they can help by clearing the drains of leaves or smaller branches and debris.

o   For large pieces of debris blocking storm drains, call 3-1-1.

o   If residents are experiencing power outages, contact BC Hydro andnever use propane or open flames inside homes or shelters to avoid carbon monoxide exposure.

  • The Gathering Place Community Centre is operating as an emergency shelter and is in urgent need of donations of warm clothing including socks, jackets and blankets. People can drop off donations 7 days a week between 9 am and 7 pm at 609 Helmcken St. or call 604-257-3858 for more information.

Background on the storm response:           

  • Vancouver Fire Rescue Safety responded to 30+ calls regarding downed power lines.
  • Vancouver Park Board crews and arborists are responding to 400 high priority calls regarding downed trees and major debris from street trees. Stanley Park had several trees down near the Stanley Park Teahouse and Second Beach parking lot. All roads in Stanley Park are currently clear and teams are working to remove branches and debris.
  • City Engineering staff are helping to clear streets and ensure catch basins are clear of leaves and other debris to prevent flooding and drainage concerns, especially with heavy precipitation called for Sunday.
