COLORADO RAPIDS 1 – VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC 1

Caps secure valuable road point against 3rd place Rapids

COMMERCE CITY, CO – Vancouver Whitecaps FC grabbed an important point on the road on Sunday night against fellow Western Conference side Colorado Rapids, drawing 1-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado thanks to Brian White’s powerful finish.

The Rapids had the first big chance of the game as Colombian forward Michael Barrios rattled the crossbar from inside the box in the 14th minute.

After some more pressure from the home side, the Rapids would open the scoring in the 28th minute thanks to Danny Wilson’s thumping header, scoring his second goal of the season to give his team the 1-0 advantage.

Despite the Rapids early foray of attacks, the ‘Caps would get right back into the game in the 41st minute.

‘Caps winger Deiber Caicedo put pressure on the Colorado backline to force the turnover, latched onto the loose ball and played a perfect ball into the path of Brian White, who smashed home his fifth goal of the season off the underside of the bar and in to give the ‘Caps the equalizer.

The ‘Caps continued to create chances after tying the match and almost found the go-ahead goal before the break, as defender Ranko Veselinović was unmarked off a corner kick but couldn’t force his effort on target to test Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough.

Both sides would go into the break tied at 1-1.

Fast forward to the 69th minute, substitute Lucas Cavallini had a great chance to give the ‘Caps the lead, as midfielder Ryan Gauld sent the Canadian international one-on-one with Yarbrough but couldn’t put his effort past the Colorado keeper.

In the 80th minute, Cavallini would once again come close to giving the ‘Caps the lead, heading the ball towards goal and forcing Yarbrough to make the save.

Four minutes later, Crepeau came up big for the ‘Caps and denied Rapids striker Diego Rubio from close range to keep the score tied at 1-1.

Crepeau would once again be called into action in the final minute of play as Colorado midfielder Kellyn Acosta was denied right on the doorstep by the Canadian international to preserve a valuable road point for the ‘Caps.

The Blue and White will now set their eyes on a full week of training to prepare for a Western Conference home clash against FC Dallas next Saturday, September 25 at BC Place. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT. You can catch the match live on TSN1 and AM730, with the radio pre-game show starting at 6 p.m. PT.
