The iM was introduced in the 2016 model year as a Scion model. Since 2017 it joined the Toyota Corolla line-up, as the iM adding a versatile hatchback configuration to the world’s all-time best selling automobile. The iM uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, mated either to a six-speed manual transmission or, as in my tester, an automatic, continuously variable transmission (CVT). For 2018, the iM arrives in only one well-equipped version, with wither a six speed manual or a Continuously Variable Transmission with Intelligent Shift. As standard features for the 2018 model include Toyota’s excellent Toyota Safety Sense C suite of safety technologies, 137-hp, 1.8 Litre VALVEMATIC engine with 7” Touchscreen Display Audio System with Aha Internet Radio and Bluetooth® Capability, Backup Camera. Heated Front Sport Seats, and 17” Alloy Wheels. The advanced Continuously Variable Transmission with intelligent shift (CVTi-S) features seven stepped shift points.
The Corolla iM has a sporty, sleek body with a full body skirt package and rear lip spoiler as standard, making the iM one of the most aggressive looking hatchbacks on the road. Inside, the cabin offers a sporty, modern look, comfortable seating for up to five adults, while the 60/40 split folding rear seats creates up to 588 litres (20.8 cubic feet) of cargo space. Driver and passengers are surrounded with premium finishes for a sophisticated look and feel.
We tested a flashy looking 2018 Electric Storm Blue model with features such as: Front Wheel Drive, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control System (TRAC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) Multifunctional Steering Wheel Controls, Audio Auxiliary Input Jack, USB Audio Input, Voice Recognition, Antenna Shark Fin Type, 6 Speakers, 7-inch Display Screen, Aha Audio System Internet Radio and POI search, Gracenote Database. Base MSRP for the iM is $ $22,750 (Manual Transmission)
Our tester with CVT transmission came in at $23,485 plus Freight & PDI $1,615.00 ion charges) for a total MSRP $25,227. On the road, the car performs well, with the CVT almost approximating a normal transmission. 137 horsepower is not a lot compared to some hot performance hatchbacks, so acceleration is not blistering but the trade-off is better fuel economy at: (L/100km) 8.3/6.5 (City/Hwy) (Automatic).
Handling is very impressive with the Corolla iM’s independent double-wishbone suspension. Steering reflexes are good and the iM fees solid and unflappable on most surfaces. At a very attractive price, excellent safety and winning Toyota reliability it comes highly recommended.
2018 Toyota iM – $ $22,750 – $23,485.
