THE Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji Gatka Akhara (SBDSJGA) on Wednesday announced the Damdama Gatka Championship, an elite Sikh martial arts competition will take place on Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on both days.

The third annual championship returns to host 72 of the most talented Gatka players from across North America at the Cloverdale Agriplex, 17798 62 Avenue in Surrey, offering an unparalleled display of skill and tradition.

The Damdama Gatka Championship is set to be the most competitive yet, with multiple national and international champions confirmed to participate, including the 2024 champions returning to defend their prestigious crowns. This unique gathering of top-tier talent will showcase the rich traditions of this ancient martial art form on an expanding global platform. 

Committed to platforming Gatka on a global stage, the Damdama Gatka Championship blends its rich traditions with the professionalism of major sporting events. Prepare for a spectacle as elite Gatka players engage in high-stakes, one-on-one combat, featuring two-minute fari-soti (bamboo stick and leather shield) matches. The action begins with qualifying matches in a group stage on Saturday, July 5, followed by the elimination championship playoffs on Sunday, July 6.

This year’s event also offers free entry to all. Attendees can also explore a vibrant marketplace with event merchandise, clothing, Sikh art, local and international artisans, literature, and community events and organizations. The championship will be broadcast live on television and online internationally, featuring an on-air team of notable Sikh media personalities and esteemed Gatka alumni. 

The Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji Gatka Akhara was brought to Surrey by Bhai Parminder Singh Ji and Bhai Charnjit Singh Ji in 2003. Over the years, SBDSJGA has been dedicated to promoting the warrior traditions of the Sikh faith and members of the organization have won local, national, and international competitions; teach and train hundreds of students in multiple cities across British Columbia; and participate in Sikh events around the globe. The organization is dedicated to the principles of practice, service, and community.
