THE City of Delta on Wednesday announced the launch of Planting Our Roots – Free Tree Project.
Starting Wednesday, March 20 at 11 a.m., the reservation form opens for residents wishing to reserve one of 250 trees. This initiative gives Delta residents the opportunity to directly contribute to the City’s goal of expanding its tree canopy.
“I am thrilled by the launch of this free tree initiative,” said Delta Mayor George V. Harvie. “Our city’s natural greenery is a key part of what makes Delta one of the most attractive and sustainable cities in the Lower Mainland. I’m proud of the City’s efforts to add to our natural beauty by providing residents with the opportunity to acquire a variety of trees—free of charge—to plant on their own property. On behalf of Delta Council, I want to thank staff for providing this opportunity to Delta residents—and even delivering the trees too!”
This project is part of the City’s Urban Forestry Strategy, which aims to create a 40% canopy cover across Delta. It involves distributing 500 trees at no cost to residents, with the distribution divided into two phases—250 in the spring and 250 in the fall of 2024. A notable feature of this initiative is the free delivery of trees directly to residents’ doorsteps, making it convenient for participants to be a part of this greening effort.
Residents are encouraged to select trees that are best suited for their environment to ensure they thrive. The City offers detailed guides and resources on its website about selecting the right tree, planting, and ongoing care to support the longevity and health of these trees. This guidance is aimed at fostering a sustainable urban canopy across Delta and ensuring residents are equipped with the knowledge to support the growth of their new tree.
