THE City of Delta announced on Thursday that it has been awarded $100,000 in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program to support the installation of 20 new Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers for Delta’s corporate fleet. This investment will play a key role in advancing Delta’s fleet electrification efforts and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program provides funding to expand EV charging networks and hydrogen refueling stations across Canada, helping municipalities transition to cleaner transportation options.

Currently, Delta operates 10 electric vehicles and two plug-in hybrid vehicles. This project builds on the 10 fleet chargers installed at City Hall, North Delta Works Yard and Fire Hall #1 in 2024 to support long-term fleet electrification.

In addition to fleet charging infrastructure, Delta has been expanding public access to EV charging. The city currently owns 50 Level 2 chargers and one fast-charging station available to the public and has licensing agreements with BC Hydro to own and operate a total of 22 fast chargers at City facilities.

“The Government of Canada is ensuring that Canadians have readily available charging options, wherever they go. We are pleased to invest in building EV charging stations for drivers in British Columbia and across Canada as they live, work, travel and play,” said Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

“With this federal funding, the City will install 20 new EV chargers to support its growing electric fleet – reducing emissions and lowering operational costs. It’s a practical investment that supports our national climate objectives while delivering long-term benefits to the community,” said Jill McKnight, MP for Delta and Minister of Veterans Affairs.

“Expanding our EV charging infrastructure is a critical step in reducing emissions and modernizing our fleet. This investment, supported by Natural Resources Canada, will help Delta transition toward a more sustainable future while maintaining high-quality services for our community,” said Delta Mayor George V. Harvie.

This project aligns with Delta’s Electric Vehicle Strategy, endorsed by council on July 6, 2020, outlining key actions to enhance the public charging network and electrify Delta’s corporate fleet.
