Driver strikes 76-year-old pedestrian, flees the scene

SURREY RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance with identifying the driver of a vehicle that struck an elderly pedestrian and fled the scene.

On March 31 just after 7 p.m., police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 12400-block of 76 Avenue. The 76-year-old pedestrian was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is now recovering at home.

Surrey RCMP frontline officers obtained video that shows a Silver Chevrolet Cruz (see photo) travelling westbound on 76 Avenue toward 124 Street and colliding with a pedestrian crossing the street. The driver stayed in their vehicle, then drove around the pedestrian they just struck, quickly fleeing the scene of the collision.

“We are thankful that caring members of our community stopped to render assistance to the victim who was left lying in the roadway,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Gurvinder Ghag. “It is a small miracle that the injuries sustained were not more serious given the impact of the collision.”

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with more information, including dash cam footage around the area of 124 Street and 76 Avenue, to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
