EDMONTON Police on Wednesday announced that Monday’s homicide victim in southwest Edmonton is Buta Singh, 56.

The VOICE had reported on Monday that the homicide victim was Buta Singh Gill, owner of Gill Built Homes Ltd. He had been identified by Moe Banga, a former Edmonton Police Service investigator and former city councillor, who was his close friend. Banga told the local media that Gill was checking on his workers when the shooting occurred. Gill leaves behind a wife, daughter and son.

At approximately 12 p.m. on Monday, patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Cavanagh Boulevard SW and Cherniak Way SW. They located three men with significant injuries. EMS responded and declared two of the men, a 49-year-old and a 56-year-old, deceased on scene and transported a 51-year-old male man to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. The man remains in hospital.

The VOICE had reported on Tuesday that a Punjabi newspaper Sanjha Punjab had said that Gill was shot dead by a roofer who then shot himself. and that the person who was seriously injured at the construction site is an engineer.

Sanjha Punjab had identified the shooter as Nick Dhaliwal, a roofer, and the wounded man as Sarbjeet Singh.

Global News reported that a family member of Dhaliwal said that he was dealing with issues related to mental health and had been admitted to hospital a few months ago. He was facing depression partly related to a money dispute. Dhaliwal was reportedly doing contract work for Gill’s company.

Edmonton Police said on Wednesday that the Edmonton Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on the 49-year-old man and determined his cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They said that they will not be releasing his name as his manner of death is deemed non-criminal in nature.

Police said no charges will be laid in relation to the homicide as the suspect is deceased. Homicide detectives are not seeking any additional suspects.

Lindsay Hilton, who said she witnessed the shooting as she was driving home, told CTV News Edmonton that she saw a black Nissan car pulling out of a construction site, executing a U-turn and then driving up behind a man who was walking down Cavanagh Boulevard in construction attire. The car bumped the man.

Hilton said: “The man in the construction vest had his gun out, pointed at the car and shot once into the driver’s side window.” Hilton drove right around the corner and then heard two more gunshots. She called 911.

Police also said that investigators are looking into whether this incident has any connection to Project Gaslight, an extortion series targeting home builders from South Asian communities.

The VOICE had reported on Monday: “There were some reports that Gill had received extortion threats and had informed the police about these.

In February, The VOICE reported that Edmonton Police were investigating 27 events related to an ongoing extortion series that has affected the South Asian community in the Edmonton region since October, including five extortions, 15 arsons and seven firearms offences.

We wrote: “No injuries have been reported as a result of the shootings, but a firefighter was injured in one of the arsons. An estimated $9 million in property damage has been reported as a result of the arsons and shootings.

“A dedicated project team continues to investigate this series and its connection to organized crime. While similar events have been reported in B.C. and Ontario, at this time, investigators do not believe these to be connected to the Edmonton series.”
