THE federal NDP on Monday announced changes to its senior leadership team, saying it is positioning the party for success in the next federal election.
Anne McGrath, the Party’s National Director, is moving into the role of Principal Secretary to party leader Jagmeet Singh. Lucy Watson, former Provincial Director of the Ontario NDP, is taking on the role of National Director for the federal party.
“Anne and Lucy have the experience and commitment we need to take on the Poilievre gut-and-cut Conservatives and an out-of-touch Liberal government,” said Singh. “We’ve already seen Pierre Poilievre vote against a school lunch program for hungry kids while food bank usage is at a record high and promise to make more cuts. He isn’t the answer to the frustration and disappointment people are feeling towards Justin Trudeau because he isn’t interested in helping families through difficult times.
“Both Anne and Lucy know what’s at stake for hardworking people, and they’ll make sure Canadians know they have a choice. You don’t have to choose between the Liberals who’ve let you down for the last eight years and the Conservatives who will strip away supports and make your life harder. You can elect New Democrats who have always and will continue to have your back – this country should work for you and your family not for the ultra-wealthy.”
In her new position, McGrath will play a larger role in overseeing progress on the NDP’s Supply and Confidence Agreement, which will deliver dental care for nine million Canadians before the next election. McGrath has previously held several senior roles within the NDP, including Chief of Staff to Jack Layton and Principal Secretary to former Alberta Premier Rachel Notley.
Watson has worked in senior positions with the federal, British Columbia and Ontario NDP. She brings years of experience growing the party across the country and supporting provincial parties in defending people struggling with housing affordability and the high cost of living.
Singh said: “Anne was a valuable part of the Notley Government, and Lucy was a part of both the BC NDP’s win and the ONDP’s success as the Official Opposition holding the Ford government to account. They’re both incredibly talented and have tons of experience defending hardworking people against the Liberal-Conservative corporate coalition.
“Canadians can trust that this team of New Democrats, working with our outstanding Caucus, will improve people’s lives while the Liberals and Conservatives keep working for the ultra-rich and well-connected.”
