THE Edmonton Police Service announced on Monday that the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office had completed an autopsy on security guard Harshandeep Singh, 20, and determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound and the manner of death was homicide.
Edmonton Police arrested and charged Evan Rain, 30, and Judith Saulteaux, 30, with first degree murder on Friday, December 6 in relation to Singh’s death. Investigators do not believe anyone else was involved in Singh’s death and a weapon was recovered during the arrest. Court dates for both accused are on Wednesday, December 11.
Police said they are aware of a video circulating online that depicts Singh’s shooting death on Friday. “We are unable to comment on the authenticity of the video as the investigation is ongoing. While three individuals are observed in the video, EPS is confident that only two individuals were involved in the shooting death,” police added.
Police said they are also aware of a photo that has been posted online that misidentifies an individual with the same surname who has no connection to Singh’s death. “We can confirm this is NOT a photo of the accused. The EPS has not posted any photos of the accused in this investigation,” police added.
“Edmontonians are rightly outraged by this tragic incident,” said EPS Homicide Staff-Sgt. Rob Bilawey. “Posting or sharing incorrect information during an ongoing investigation impedes the process and disrespects the victim and their loved ones. We send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.”
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe set up to “help cover the costs of sending Harshandeep’s body back to India for his last rites, as well as assist with funeral expenses, legal costs, and other unforeseen financial challenges” had raised more than $122,000 by Monday night.
“Harshandeep’s family resides in Pind Matehri Jattan, Ambala, Haryana, India,” according to the GoFundMe. “The funds raised through this campaign will be deposited into the account of Harshandeep’s aunt … who will then forward the full amount to his parents in India,” it says.
“Harshandeep was the only son of his parents and a beloved brother to his sister. He came to Canada just 1.5 years ago on a student visa, full of dreams for a better life and opportunities to support his family back in India. His untimely death has left an unimaginable void in their lives, both emotionally and financially.”
National Security Guard Protection Services Inc. of Edmonton said in a Facebook post that Harshandeep Singh was one of their team members. “We are devastated by the event and are unable to comment on an active police investigation. We have been working with law enforcement to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice. Our deepest condolences go out to Harshandeep Singh friends and family,” the company said.
Edmonton Police said that on Friday, December 6 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Downtown Branch patrol officers responded to a report of a gunshot inside an apartment building in the area of 106 Street and 107 Avenue. Officers located an unresponsive 20-year-old male security guard Harshandeep Singh in a stairwell and immediately conducted first aid. EMS responded, treated and transported him to hospital where he was declared deceased.
Homicide Section detectives continue to investigate what led up to the shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
