SURREY RCMP are sharing some safety reminders with the community to ensure Halloween and Diwali celebrations remain safe and fun for everyone.
Halloween and Diwali fall on the same day this year. Surrey RCMP and the City of Surrey Bylaws Enforcement Team will be working together to ensure public safety.
As per City bylaws, fireworks / firecrackers are not permitted to be sold, purchased, or displayed in Surrey. Fireworks are not permitted to be used in Surrey without a permit granted by the Surrey Fire Service Fire Prevention Branch. Visit the City of Surrey website to learn how to obtain Fireworks Permits and for additional information on Fireworks Bylaws.
Those caught selling or setting off fireworks are subject to fines and seizure of the fireworks. The fines have increased significantly this year.
If you have concerns regarding the misuse of fireworks in your neighborhood, contact Surrey Bylaws at 604-591-4370 (operating until 1 a.m., November 1). Do NOT use 911 for fireworks-related concerns; 911 is reserved for emergencies only. After midnight, call the Surrey RCMP non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 to report any complaints about fireworks. Note that Surrey RCMP are unable to receive reports of criminal activity via social media (Facebook and Twitter).
RCMP encourage you to discuss safety tips with your family members especially children who are heading out to trick or treat or attending places of worship to celebrate Diwali such as:
- Have a flashlight with you
- Plan a route that includes well-lit streets, sidewalks and crosswalks
- Have the emergency contact information on you
- Avoid facemasks that could obstruct your vision
- Leave any fake weaponry at home
- Use marked crosswalks, wear visible reflective clothing and ensure that drivers see you before you cross the street
- Drivers must use extra care when reversing out of driveways and at intersections
- Do not consume any treats unless they have been inspected by an adult first
“Surrey RCMP wish everyone in the community a Spooktacular Halloween and Prosperous Diwali,” says Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officer, Surrey RCMP.
