Harjit Sajjan not seeking re-election

HARJIT Sajjan, federal Emergency Preparedness Minister who was first elected in Vancouver South in 2015, on Wednesday announced on social media that he will not be seeking re-election.

Sajjan, who previously served as Minister of International Development and Minister of National Defence, said: “After almost a decade in politics and with a sense of confidence in the future, I am announcing that I will not be seeking re-election.”

Sajjan, who endorsed Mark Carney for leader of the Liberal Party, wrote: “Sadly, over the past few years, our political landscape has become increasingly toxic and polarized, with more aggressive rhetoric and even physical threats. This environment not only takes a significant toll on politicians, but also on our ability to raise our children in a healthy and safe way.”

Sajjan said he was grateful to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the confidence he placed in him by entrusting him with these cabinet positions.

He said that he will remain “dedicated member” of the Liberal Party.

Sajjan immigrated to Canada from India with his family when he was five years old and grew up in South Vancouver.

Sajjan was a member of the Vancouver Police Department for 11 years, completing his career as a detective with the gang crime unit. As a member of the British Columbia Regiment, he participated in four operational deployments – one to Bosnia and three to Afghanistan.
