IHIT called in after human remains found in Surrey

SURREY RCMP have one man in custody after human remains were found on the roadside on 48 Avenue.

On Friday at approximately 4:22 a.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a fire in a ditch on 48 Avenue near 168 Street. When the fire was extinguished by Surrey Fire Service, officers located human remains.

At approximately, 5 a.m. one man was arrested for murder at a residence in Newton and was taken into custody by Surrey RCMP.

This does not appear to be a random act. The investigation is still in its early stages, however this incident is not believed to have any connection to gang activity, police said.

The area surrounding the scene will be cordoned off for a significant amount of time. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called in and will be working in partnership with the Surrey RCMP.

Police are currently in the evidence gathering phase.
