THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has identified Thursday night’s homicide victim in Surrey as 21-year-old Bilal Hameed of Surrey in an effort to advance the investigation.
Hameed was the driver of a vehicle at the time of the shooting near the 10800-block of 129 Street in Surrey.
Hameed has had previous interactions with the police, IHIT said.
The investigation is still in the early stages, however, IHIT said its investigators can confirm that a black Dodge pickup truck was involved in the shooting and it was recovered burnt in the 9400-block of 184 Street in Surrey shortly after.
On June 26 at approximately 7:40 p.m., Surrey Police Service (SPS) frontline officers responded to calls of a shooting near the 10800-block of 129 Street. SPS officers located a male suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite life saving measures, he succumbed to his injuries at scene.
IHIT deployed to Surrey and assumed conduct of the investigation.
IHIT said it continues to work in partnership with the SPS, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.
Evidence to date indicates this was a targeted incident with no ongoing risk to the public.
“Police are working diligently to identify all parties involved in this shooting,” said IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong. “Investigators are expected to be in the area interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence and canvassing for video.”
Investigators are looking to speak with anyone with dashcam footage who was in the areas of the 10800-block of 129 Street in Surrey on June 26 between 5:30 and 8 p.m., and/or the 9400-block of 184 Street in Surrey on June 26 between 7 and 9 p.m.
