THE Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) announced on Wednesday that it is investigating the arrest of a woman in Surrey.
On November 2, 2025, a woman attended the Surrey Police Service (SPS) district office in the Whalley neighbourhood to speak with officers and file a report.
While speaking with police, there was an interaction between officers and the woman, and she was arrested outside the station.
SPS officers later released the woman with no charges and drove her to her residence. The woman then sought medical treatment at a hospital later that day.
The IIO was notified of the incident by the woman in December and began investigating.
Investigators have since confirmed the woman’s injuries meet the threshold of serious harm but are still determining if there is a connection between the serious harm and officer action or inaction.
If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
The IIO requests any witnesses who have information regarding this matter to contact the IIO at its Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
