RIDGE Meadows RCMP recently completed a joint forces education and enforcement campaign with multiple partners on their waterways during a busy stretch of hot summer days earlier this month.
Officers with Ridge Meadows RCMP and Coquitlam RCMP were out on the water conducting numerous impaired boating checks and were assisted by federal and regional agencies (Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Metro Vancouver Regional District) to ensure that all boaters had the proper safety equipment. Many boaters were observed not wearing lifejackets and were sent back to shore to properly gear up.
Officers were also stationed on land at nearby boat launches and check points to engage with boaters once they departed the water. Multiple Motor Vehicle Act violation tickets were issued along with Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRP) for impaired driving. Volunteers and ICBC staff were also on scene to provide further information and support.
Overall, the campaign was a success, and officers appreciated the coordinated efforts of all their partners involved to ensure public safety.
“Ridge Meadows RCMP will continue to conduct regular patrols on our waterways these last few weeks of summer educating boaters on the rules and regulations of safe boating practices, and deterring and enforcing impaired boating,” says Ridge Meadows RCMP Staff-Sgt. Michelle Luca.
“We encourage boaters, and motorists, to plan ahead and take the extra steps necessary to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable end of summer.”
Tips to keep it a safer summer on the water:
