Indian held at Sharjah airport trying to smuggle gold

An Indian man has been arrested at Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates while trying to smuggle out 12 gold biscuits to his country.

The suspect, who was identified, was nabbed by customs officers at the airport. He was heading to India according to an official spokesperson from Sharjah Police.

He tried to cheat authorities by concealing 12 gold biscuits inside two bracelets which he was wearing.

Police said the suspect’s plan was to smuggle the 24 carat gold weighing 699 grams into his home country using fraudulent methods to escape tax payments there, The Gulf News reported on Saturday.

The suspect confessed that he used a fraudulent method to evade the payment of taxes in his country and get full cash value for the smuggled pieces when sold.

Police warned residents and visitors not to take part in illegal activities which contravene the laws of their countries.—IANS
