Dubai- An Indian woman is among three domestic maids who managed to escape after being allegedly abused by their employers in Bahrain during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The three – the other two being Indonesians – sustained injuries while escaping and are being treated at the Salmaniya Medical Complex in Bahrain’s capital Manama, the Gulf Daily News reported Tuesday.

All three have claimed that they were overworked and physically harassed by their employers during Ramadan.

Their case have been taken up by the Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS), which works for basic human rights of expatriate workers in Bahrain.

“The cases of the two Indonesian domestic workers were referred by us to their embassy, while we are following up the case of the Indian woman who had to undergo surgery on her hand and fractured her legs,” MWPS chairwoman Marietta Dias was quoted as saying.

According to Dias, the Indian maid, identified only as Anusha, hails from the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and entered Bahrain on a forged visit visa.

Though her papers showed her to be 35 years old, a probe revealed that she was only 19 years old.

According to Indian rules, only women aged 30 years and above can go abroad to work as domestic maids.

“Clearly the documents were forged in India, and this poor lady paid BD (Bahraini dinar) 310 ($822) to an agent to complete all the formalities,” Dias said.

The MWPS has urged the authorities concerned to investigate the allegations. —IANS
