Reyna, Mutch score as ‘Caps rally from two goals down to earn 2-2 draw at LAFC
LOS ANGELES, CA – In their first match at Banc of California Stadium, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (12-13-8) came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Los Angeles Football Club (16-8-9) on Sunday.
Six players returning from international duty came back into acting head coach Craig Dalrymple’s starting lineup, including centre backs Doneil Henry and Kendall Waston, central midfielders Aly Ghazal and Russell Teibert, attacking midfielder Yordy Reyna, and winger Alphonso Davies. Only one change was made from the October 6 win at Toronto FC, as striker Erik Hurtado started in place of the suspended Kei Kamara.
The home side got off to a quick start, as Diego Rossi netted twice inside the first 15 minutes to give LAFC a 2-0 lead. But the ‘Caps worked themselves into the match, with Alphonso Davies drawing a penalty kick on 22 minutes which was finished calmly by Yordy Reyna to cut the deficit to 2-1 going into halftime.
After neither side seriously threatened for the first 20 minutes of the second half, substitute Jordon Mutch unleashed a wicked long distance strike to level the match at 2-2 on 65 minutes.
Despite the result, the ‘Caps were officially eliminated from contention for the 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs.
The ‘Caps wrap-up the season next Sunday, October 28 at home against rivals Portland Timbers. Limited tickets remain available. For more information, visit whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
