Man charged for allegedly assaulting sex trade worker in Surrey

RAYMOND Kellett, 26, was charged with aggravated assault and uttering threats on Sunday in relation to the May 5 assault in Whalley, Surrey RCMP said on Monday.

On May 5 at 2:24 a.m., police received a report of a woman screaming and a fire alarm ringing in the 13500-block of Old Yale Road. Officers located a woman who had been physically assaulted by a man in the staircase of an underground parking lot. The man fled the area prior to police being called.

Police said that initial indications were that this assault was linked to street-level sex work. The Surrey Woman’s Centre’s SMART Van that works closely with the Surrey RCMP Special Victims Unit (SVU) was engaged to distribute information regarding this assault to their clients.

Surrey RCMP said that the suspect was identified and arrested on May 7.

Kellett was remanded into custody while he awaits his next court appearance.
