Mayors of Delta, Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Township of Langley request community-specific COVID-19 data

DELTA Mayor George V. Harvie, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker, Langley Mayor Val van den Broek and Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese on Wednesday in joint letter to Premier John Horgan requested the release of community-specific COVID-19 data that would enable them to support senior governments, residents, businesses and other stakeholders effectively during the challenges of the pandemic.

The letter states:

“We as a group of Mayors within the Fraser Health Authority south region are writing to reiterate our request for the release of community-specific COVID-19 data. As municipalities, we are committed and uniquely positioned to supporting senior governments, residents, businesses and other stakeholders during the challenges of the pandemic. To perform these functions effectively, we need more granular and frequent data.

“A better understanding of community transmission levels will help us make informed decisions regarding our facilities and the associated safety plans. More detailed local COVID-19 data will also guide our decision making and resource allocation processes while working with local businesses and community organizations as they work to stay safe, open and economically viable. This data would also allow us to tailor our messaging, implement preventive measures, focus enforcement and work with the Fraser Health Authority on any other appropriate measures.

“We appreciate the privacy and reliability concerns that can be associated with more granular data; however, we strongly believe that the benefits associated with responsible use of this data is significant and needs to be considered. Local governments play a key role in the Province’s COVID-19 response and providing data similar to the monthly data provided to the six subareas in Vancouver will strengthen our response while recognizing our diverse and geographically unique communities.

“Thank you for your consideration of this request and we would be pleased to provide more information on the use of this data if required. We look forward to your response.”
