Multiple Highway No. 1 collisions: BC Highway Patrol says to avoid highway driving if possible

MULTIPLE collisions in both directions on Highway No.1 near the Port Mann Bridge are causing extreme traffic delays, and BC Highway Patrol is asking commuters to reconsider driving until the roads are clear.

“If you’re a confident driver who is prepared for the snow, you need to slow down more than usual,” says Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “If you’re not a confident driver, or your car isn’t winter ready, stay off the roads entirely. This isn’t your day.”

BC Highway Patrol will be working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to get Highway No.1 cleared and safe for travel as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, all drivers need to do the following:

  • Consider whether you absolutely have to drive;
  • Ensure your vehicle has good snow tires and is completely free from snow on all windows, the roof, the hood and the trunk;
  • Leave extra time for travel and be more patient than usual;
  • If you’re a confident driver, slow down.

BC Highway Patrol also encourages motorists to plan ahead and consult DriveBC’s website and their local radio and TV station to keep up with local conditions.
