FOLLOWING the announcement on August 19 that hotel workers at Sheraton Vancouver Airport have ratified their new agreement and will earn a living wage and economic security, NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody-Coquitlam) said in a statement: “It is exciting to see people earn the livable wages they deserve with increases to keep up with rising costs of food and housing.”
She added: “I know that workers are proud of what they have achieved. This is another example of the power of unions that help defend against corporate greed and meet the rising cost of living for their members. Striking for 14 months is incredibly difficult and shows the resolve and determination of these workers.”
Zarrillo said: “While the Liberals and Conservatives have repeatedly left workers behind, or used them for political games, the NDP continues to stand-up with workers. With victories like this, workers from coast-to-coast-to-coast see the power of solidarity. My NDP colleagues and I wish the workers all the best as they return to their jobs with their new living wages, and I look forward to my next opportunity to enjoy their hospitality.”
