NDP Leader Tom Mulcair issued the following statement on the 31st anniversary of the Golden Temple invasion:
ON the 31st anniversary of the invasion of the Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple, I extend heartfelt sympathies to the families and other loved ones of all those who lost their lives.
The tragic events that began in June of 1984 saw violence brought to dozens of gurdwaras in Punjab, India. The effects still reverberate through the Sikh community in India and around the world.
New Democrats stand in solidarity with the Sikh community, human rights organizations and people of conscience around the world in calling for a full rendering of accounts of the events that occurred during these tragic days. When innocent lives are lost, it is the duty of the international community to seek honest answers, and should Canada play a role in seeking justice for those impacted.
As we pay our respects to those who lost their lives, let us re-commit to truth-seeking, healing and reconciliation, and to the protection of democracy and human rights around the world.”
