OBITUARY: ABNASH KAUR GILL

Long-time resident of Coquitlam, Abnash Kaur Gill,  who was born in Kotli Than Singh, Jalandhar District, passed away suddenly on August 19, 2023.

Abnash was active in building her community as a long-time member, volunteer and former board director in many local Coquitlam groups including: Dogwood Pavilion Seniors Society; W.H.O. group; Friendship Circle; Mackin House; Life Writers; Coquitlam Farmer’s Market and The South Asian Cultural Group. She could always be seen in her neighbourhood cleaning up as part of the ‘Adopt a Street’ initiative.

Combining her faith and health-focused outlook, Abnash introduced weeknight yoga sessions at many Lower Mainland Gurudwaras and informally shared yoga at Dogwood Pavilion. Every weekend, Abnash helped prepare meals at Akali Singh Sikh Society Gurudwara for those in need and her community.

Fulfilling her passion of working with children, Abnash spent weekdays as a noon hour supervisor of students at Porter Elementary School and she taught Punjabi to many children and adults.

Abnash had a vibrant personality; she could always be found dancing up a storm at family functions, and making new friends wherever she went. She and her late husband Pritpal Singh Gill from Jhingran, Nawanshahr District, leave a legacy that continues on with their two sons and wives, five grandchildren as well as many members of their extended family all over the world.

All family and friends are invited to her residence for a Sehaj Paath (scripture reading), to pay their respects and to share stories with the family in celebration of her full life.

Abnash’s funeral service will be held at Riverside Funeral Home (7410 Hopcott Road, Delta) on September 3, 2023 at 3 p.m.  It will be followed by the Antim Ardas (final prayer) at Akali Singh Sikh Society Gurdwara (1890 Skeena Street, Vancouver) on September 3, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.  Langar (meal) will be served at the Gurudwara.
