OBITUARY: SUBEDAR GURDEV SINGH POWAR

IT is with sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Subedar Gurdev Singh Powar, 1932-2022, of Mitha-pur, Punjab. He passed away peacefully Saturday, February 19, 2022 in Burnaby, with his family by his side.

Born on February 9, 1932, he had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. He was predeceased by his parents, mother, Bhant Kaur and father, Subedar Genda Singh. Also predeceased by his wife, Daljit Kaur, daughter Surinder Kaur and son Balvinder Singh. He was survived by his sons, Harjinder and Pargat and daughters Sukhvinder and Davinder.

Gurdev Singh will be remembered lovingly as the patriarch of the Powar family. Gurdev Singh served the Indian army from the age of 18 to 42, before immigrating to Vanderhoof, BC, with his family in 1978. There, he worked long hours at the mill to support the family. In 1982, he settled in Vancouver where he turned his love of gardening into a longtime job and ongoing hobby. He devoted his free time to his community as a committee member at Vancouver Khalsa Diwan society at Ross Street Gurdwara.

Throughout his life, he maintained an active interest in politics, societal issues and lifelong learning. He proudly encouraged his 21 grandkids to pursue higher education and perform community service. He will always be remembered for his wisdom, guidance, and lively presence.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 6 at Riverside Funeral Home, Delta, BC. A prayer service will be followed at Sukh Sagar Gurdwara, New Westminster.
