ONTARIO’S Peel Regional Police announced on Monday that they have arrested and charged Varinder Singh, a 24-year-old man from Brampton, in relation to a carjacking in Brampton.
On Tuesday, February 11 at 11:35 a.m., the victim was putting gas in her car, a silver Mercedes Benz C300 sedan, when she was approached by two male suspects armed with knives. The suspects demanded the victim’s keys, which she refused.
Police said the suspects tried to rip the keys out of the victim’s hand and began to punch her. The suspects were able to take the keys out of the victim’s hand and stole her vehicle, which was last seen southbound on Hurontario Street. The victim suffered minor injuries.
On Wednesday, February 19, officers from York Regional Police observed a male operating the victim’s vehicle in the area of Weston Road and Rutherford Road in the City of Vaughan. After consultation with investigators from the Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Bureau, the vehicle was stopped in the area of Pine Valley Drive and Major MacKenzie Drive West in the City of Vaughan, and the driver was placed under arrest.
Singh has been charged with robbery, and wear disguise with intent.
He was transported back to the Region of Peel, where he was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
In addition to the above charges, York Regional Police have charged Singh with possession of property obtained by crime, and fail to comply with release order.
At the time of his arrest, Singh was on house arrest for two previous robberies, assault, mischief over $5,000, and failure to comply with a release order. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court.
This investigation remains ongoing, and police anticipate more charges could be laid.
