OPINION: Help is on the way for businesses and workers

FROM the beginning of the pandemic, our government has been there to help people and businesses get through these challenging times.

The vast majority of businesses have been following the rules and coming up with innovative ways to deliver their goods and services to people. They have kept us active and connected to our communities and loved ones.

I know the current health orders have been difficult for business owners, workers, and their families, and I want to recognize their resiliency as we all continue to do our part to help keep people safe.

To support businesses who have been ordered to temporarily shut down – including gyms, bars, and event venues – we have announced $10 million in funding for the COVID-19 Closure Relief Grant package.

Applications will be accepted from January 12 to February 28 and are available at www.gov.bc.ca/business-relief.

The grant is designed to get B.C. business owners and workers through this challenging period, and help with expenses like rent, insurance, employee wages, maintenance and utilities.

The grant is meant to complement existing supports from the provincial and federal governments.

Businesses of any size are encouraged to apply, to receive one-time funding ranging from $1,000-$10,000 in grants.

The exact amount will be based on the number of people employed by the business.

We are also asking all businesses to review their COVID-19 safety plans, ensure they are in place and work to do their part to reduce transmission.

As we all look forward to supporting our favourite bars, gyms, and event venues in-person, we can continue to support these businesses and their workers by buying gift cards and memberships for future use.

More information on the business relief grant, including the application process and eligibility can be found at www.gov.bc.ca/business-relief.
