Ottawa woman charged for removing another woman’s hijab

OTTAWA Police Service frontline officers, assisted by the Hate and Bias Crime Unit, charged a woman following an assault incident that occurred on October 6.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., a woman was walking on Hinton Avenue North near Armstrong Street when she was randomly assaulted by an unknown woman who forcefully removed her hijab. The attacker then fled on foot.

Frontline patrol officers attended the scene but were not able to locate the suspect at the time.

Investigators of the Hate and Bias Crime Unit were able to later identify the suspect.

Now they have charged the 62-year-old woman of Ottawa with:

  • Hate-motivated assault
  • Hate-motivated mischief

Any evidence to support a hate motivation offence is to be presented during sentencing.

She had already been detained on an outstanding matter. She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

The Ottawa Police said it has zero tolerance for hate-motivated incidents and will fully investigate any report that is filed.
