Pitt Meadows resident becomes victim of distraction theft

RIDGE Meadows RCMP recently received a report of a distraction theft in their jurisdiction and are warning the public to be vigilant and speak to friends and family about this type of crime.

On July 15 at approximately 2 p.m., a female suspect engaged in a conversation with an elderly victim outside their home in the 19400-block of Hammond Road in Pitt Meadows. Through distraction techniques, the suspect was able to replace the victim’s expensive jewellery with worthless jewellery before the victim realized what had happened.

The suspect is described as a white female in her mid 40’s with a heavier build, and wearing light coloured pants and a t-shirt.

Anyone with more information on this incident or who may have video or dash cam video in the area at the time is asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251 quoting file# 2025-14354.

While similar thefts have occurred throughout the region leading to multiple police warnings, the nicer weather means more residents will be out and about and the potential risk of these crimes increases, police note.

“Be cautious of strangers invading your personal space and don’t be afraid to say no or make some noise if you feel uncomfortable and suspect suspicious behaviour,” says Ridge Meadows RCMP Staff-Sgt. Michelle Luca. “Trust your instincts and remain vigilant, even if you’re just out for a walk or on your own property.”

If you have been the victim of this type of crime, you are encouraged to contact the Ridge Meadows RCMP as soon as possible.
