PNE and City of Vancouver to celebrate five decades of Bachman-Turner Overdrive

ON August 20, 2024 Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) will rock the Pacific Coliseum as one of the celebrated performers of the PNE Fair’s Summer Night Concerts.

BTO, one of Canada’s most celebrated rock ‘n roll bands ever, played the PNE five decades ago in a concert that many consider one of the marquee performances of the era. On Tuesday, August 20 the iconic Pacific Coliseum will come alive with the music of BTO in a special event that will feature hits from the band’s considerable book of music, including such hits as “Let It Ride“, “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet“, “Takin’ Care of Business“, “Hey You” and “Roll on Down the Highway“.

PNE Creative Director Patrick Roberge says, “BTO is the pride of Western Canada and we are excited to pay tribute to Randy and the rest of the band for their impact to rock ‘n roll here in Canada and around the world.”

Randy Bachman, one of the original members of BTO and longtime British Columbia resident says it’s a thrill to be celebrating those amazing 1970’s era shows with this special concert.

“In 1974, BTO returned home to Vancouver with a #1 album, a #1 single, and a world tour. After years of playing Gastown clubs and the Breakers in Point Roberts every Sunday, this was a triumphant celebration. To play the PNE where we had seen so many great rock concerts was golden! We had so many people there that night, we set an attendance record. For this show my son Tal has joined the band, replacing my brothers who have passed, and BTO is back in full Overdrive! We will rock it!”

As a special tribute to the impact of Bachman-Turner Overdrive to British Columbia and Canada, the City of Vancouver will declare Tuesday, August 20 as BTO Day in Vancouver. Mayor Ken Sim will present the proclamation to Randy Bachman at a special celebration at the Freedom Mobile Stage in Festival Park. The event, open to all Fairgoers, will include the Proclamation Ceremony and remarks from Randy Bachman.

“Vancouver has always had a special place in its heart for rock ‘n roll, and few bands have left a mark as deep as Bachman-Turner Overdrive,” says Sim. “Declaring August 20 as ‘BTO Day’ is our way of celebrating not just their music, but the spirit and energy Randy and the band have brought to our city for decades.”
