ALBERTA POLITICS: United Conservative Party releases leadership election details

THE Leadership Election Committee of the United Conservative Party has released details on the process to elect a new leader.

Voting will take place by preferential, non-weighted ballot by phone or on-line over a three-day period beginning at 9 a.m. on October 26 and ending at 5 p.m. on October 28. To be eligible to vote, memberships must be purchased by 5 p.m. on September 29. Members will also be required to register to vote with proof of identity by 5 p.m. on October 13. A registration website will be provided for this purpose.

Candidates for the leadership must have been a member of the UCP or one of the legacy parties for at least six months prior to filing an application and support the principles outlined in the Agreement in Principle which currently governs the United Conservative Party.  The entry fee for candidates is $75,000. Applications for entry must be made to the Leadership Election Committee no later than 5 p.m. on September 12.

Five leadership candidate debates are planned around the province. More detail on locations and times will be made available on the unitedconservative.ca website as they are finalized.

Results of the leadership election will be announced shortly after the vote closes on October 28 at The Metropolitan Centre in Calgary. More detail on this event will be shared at a later date.
