‘Possible’ suspect in custody after 18-year-old fatally stabbed in Surrey school parking lot

SURREY RCMP are currently on scene following a stabbing in the parking lot of Tamanawis Secondary School in Newton that has left one person deceased.

On Tuesday, November 22 at 12:08 p.m., police responded to a report that a person had been stabbed in the school parking lot located in the 12600-block of 66 Avenue. Police arrived within minutes and immediately began lifesaving measures.

The 18-year-old victim was transported to hospital, however, despite all attempts to revive the individual he has succumbed to his injuries.

Police said they located and arrested one possible suspect who has been transported to Surrey RCMP cells.

Tamanawis Secondary School’s Acting Principal Ian McGennis in a letter to parents and guardians of the students said the incident occurred during lunch and emergency personnel attended immediately.

He said: “The incident involved an altercation that resulted in one individual sustaining serious injury. This individual is not a member of our school community.”

He added: “Shortly, after the incident occurred, our school was placed in a hold and secure, which involves everyone remaining inside the school as exterior doors are secured.”

The area surrounding the scene will be cordoned off for a significant amount of time. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called in and will be working in partnership with the Surrey RCMP.

Police said they are currently in the evidence gathering phase.
