PREMIER David Eby on Wednesday said in a statement on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab: “Today, Sikh communities in British Columbia and around the world celebrate the 556th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and a beacon of peace, equality and compassion.
“Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached that we are all equal, regardless of race, gender or religion, and that serving others is foundational to building strong communities. These messages remain as relevant today as they were more than five centuries ago and continue to inspire people of all faiths and backgrounds.
“On this sacred occasion, Sikhs gather at gurdwaras, read scripture and practise sevā, which is selfless service to others regardless of background. Sevā takes many forms, from hosting community dinners to helping neighbours in need.
“Today is also an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the Sikh faith and to thank their Sikh friends and neighbours for all they do for our communities and our province.
“Happy Gurpurab to all those who celebrate and thank you for all you do to help build a strong, inclusive and thriving British Columbia.
“Gurpurab di lakh lakh vadhai!”
